How a pro gets hard-water marks off a glass shower screen
If your glass shower screen has gone cloudy and won't come clean no matter how hard you scrub, you're not doing it wrong. Those white marks are hard-water minerals, limescale, bonded to the surface. A normal spray-and-wipe can't shift them. You need to break the mineral down, not push it around.
Here's the order we use on a real clean. Test on a small corner first, especially on coated or tinted glass.
- 1
Dry-check the glass first
Run a dry finger over the marks. If they feel rough and raised, it's mineral build-up. If the glass feels smooth but looks cloudy, the etching may be permanent. Be honest with yourself before you spend an hour on it.
- 2
Soften it with white vinegar
Warm a cup of plain white vinegar slightly, spray or wipe it over the marks, and leave it 10 to 15 minutes. The acid breaks the mineral bond. Keep it wet, and re-spray if it starts drying.
- 3
Make a gentle paste for the stubborn spots
Mix bicarb soda with a little water into a paste. Work it over the worst marks with a non-scratch pad in small circles. It's a mild abrasive, enough to lift limescale, gentle enough not to scratch glass.
- 4
Squeegee, don't just wipe
Rinse with warm water and pull the water off top-to-bottom with a squeegee. Wiping with a cloth re-deposits minerals; a squeegee takes them away with the water.
- 5
Seal it so it stays clear
Once it's dry and clear, buff a tiny amount of car or glass sealant over it. Water then beads and runs off instead of drying into new marks. This is the step almost everyone skips, and it's the one that keeps the glass clear.
Questions
Will vinegar damage my shower screen?+
Not plain glass. Avoid vinegar on natural stone tiles or anodised metal frames nearby, and always test coated or tinted glass on a small spot first.
Why do the marks come straight back?+
Because the minerals are still in your water. Squeegeeing after each shower and sealing the glass a few times a year is what actually keeps it clear.
