How to freshen up a fabric lounge (from someone who restored furniture for 10 years)
A fabric lounge holds more than it looks: body oils, dust, crumbs, and the smell of everyday life. Most people either ignore it or soak it and hope. Both are a mistake. Over-wetting upholstery is the fastest way to leave watermarks, stretch the fabric, or grow mould inside the foam.
This is the gentle, low-moisture method from ten years of upholstery work. Check the care tag first. A W means water-based cleaning is fine, an S means solvent only (skip the water steps), and X means vacuum only.
- 1
Vacuum properly, into the seams
Most of what dulls a lounge is dry debris. Use the upholstery tool and a crevice tool to get right into the seams and under the cushions. Do this thoroughly and the fabric already looks better.
- 2
Spot-test before anything wet
Mix a few drops of gentle fabric cleaner in warm water. Test on a hidden patch, the back of a cushion or under the frame, and wait for it to dry to check for colour change.
- 3
Lift, don't soak
Dampen a microfibre cloth with the solution, damp not wet, and blot the surface. Work in sections. The goal is to lift grime onto the cloth, not push water into the foam. Rinse the cloth often.
- 4
Deodorise with bicarb
Once dry, sprinkle bicarb soda lightly over the whole lounge, leave it 20 minutes to pull odours out of the fabric, then vacuum it off. This is what makes a lounge smell fresh again, not just look it.
- 5
Brush the nap back
Finish by brushing the fabric in one direction with a soft brush to even out the nap. It's the upholsterer's last step, and it's the difference between 'cleaned' and 'restored'.
Questions
Can I just use a steam cleaner on my couch?+
Carefully, and only on water-safe (W) fabric. Steam adds a lot of moisture. Too much and you risk watermarks and mould in the foam. Low-moisture blotting is safer for most lounges.
What if there's a stain I can't shift?+
Stop before you make it worse. Set-in stains and delicate fabrics are where a specialist matters. It's the kind of restoration work Meg adds on to a regular clean.
